Getting Started with PMM
PMM internships integrate your classroom learning with practical experience in a teaching setting for ministry. Placement in an approved teaching setting (e.g., church, agency, campus ministry, hospital, retirement community, social justice ministry, etc.) should provide experience in a broad range of ministerial learning activities.
In all instances, learning partners from the PMM site will help seminarians develop learning goals, engage together in regular theological and leadership reflection, and participate in an evaluation of the seminarian’s learning.
M.Div. seminarians are required to complete 4 credit hours of PMM. The pre-requisite to begin the PMM requirement is 24 credit hours that include Spiritual Formation – MM101 and MM102.
Seminarians may use two full-time summer internship terms or one part-time year-long internship to satisfy this requirement. Here are your options (Please note that seminarians will not be placed at their home church unless employed there.):
Part-time Year-long Internships (1 credit hour per semester)
8-9 hours/week for fall and spring semesters (including winter months).
PMM placements determined by May 1 for the following fall semester.
Required orientation with ALL learning partners (1 of the provided dates).
Colloquy class, co-led by Wesley faculty and an area minister.
*Full-time Summer Internships (2 credit hours per summer)
25 hours/week for 9 weeks (dates established by the PM&M office).
PMM placements determined by April 1 for the following summer.
Required orientation at the June session with both learning partners.
4 required ZOOM colloquy class sessions Monday evenings during the internship weeks.
Colloquy class online, led by either a Wesley faculty or an area minister.
It would be optimal that your placement be the same for both summer sessions.
*Additional Notes for Summer PMM Internships
All summer placement proposal documents must be submitted by April 1st. To optimize the internship the site for each summer should be t the same.
Submit complete placement proposal required documents from both the seminarian and the site:
- Seminarians need to email confirmation of their proposed site by name and the term (summer or fall/spring) that they intend to engage the site. Copy your proposed learning partners on this email.
- Sites will need to become approved PMM sites for the placement to be considered.
The four required ZOOM colloquy meetings run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The first and last dates are the first and last Mondays of the internship. The other two dates may be found in the syllabus.
Learning teams (intern, clergy or mentoring partner, and lay or site partner) are required to attend the June PMM-SPP Orientation Session. Register on the page: Applying for PM&M under the last accordion (+) tab.
Colloquy work during the 9 weeks of the summer internship is in an online format through Blackboard as well as the four ZOOM meetings.
The Learning Partnership (clergy/mentoring learning partner, lay/site learning partner, & intern) are expected to meet weekly for theological and leadership reflection throughout the 9-week summer internship.
Seminarians are not allowed to enroll in any other course during the 9 weeks of the summer internship.
Resources for the Summer Learning Partners are available online under the PMM menus Congregations & Nonprofits and Current Learning Partnerships.
