Chapel and Spiritual Formation

Chapel and Spiritual Formation

At Wesley Theological Seminary, we believe that spiritual formation is just as essential as academic preparation. That’s why our community gathers regularly for worship, prayer, and spiritual reflection—to help you grow not just as a student, but as a person called to faithful ministry and service.

A Community Rooted in Worship

Chapel Services Tuesdays at 11 a.m. in Oxnam Chapel

Worship is central to life at Wesley DC. Our chapel services bring together students, faculty, and staff to encounter God through preaching, music, prayer, and the rich traditions of the global Church. Services reflect the diversity of our community and the variety of worship styles represented by our students and faculty. As a student, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in—and even lead—worship through our Student Preacher Initiative, where students are invited to share sermons and lead chapel services as part of their formation. It’s a space to bring your classroom learning into conversation with real-life ministry and to share your gifts with the wider community.

Spiritual Growth, Every Step of the Way

Your time at Wesley DC is not just about learning theology—it’s also about becoming grounded in spiritual practices that will sustain you in ministry. We offer:

  • Small formation groups for prayer, reflection, and discernment
  • Spiritual retreats to pause and reconnect with your sense of call
  • Guided prayer and meditation opportunities throughout the year

Whether you’re deepening your existing faith or exploring new spiritual practices, you’ll find a supportive and vibrant environment at Wesley DC.

Chapel Services:

  • Tuesdays during the academic year
  • 11:00 am–12:00 pm in Oxnam Chapel
  • Livestreamed and recorded for those joining remotely (Facebook and Youtube)

From dynamic preaching and inspiring music to uplifting prayer and silent reflection, chapel is a space where all are welcome!

Spiritual Formation Opportunities

Spiritual formation at Wesley DC is woven into the fabric of community life. Through intentional programming, small groups, retreats, and pastoral care, students are invited to deepen their spiritual practices and grow in discernment.

Opportunities include:

  • Formation Groups for MDiv and MA students
  • Spiritual Direction available through trusted practitioners
  • Retreats and quiet days throughout the academic year
  • Lectures and conversations on vocation, ethics, and spirituality
  • Ecumenical and interfaith prayer services throughout the year

Rooted in Tradition, Open to the Spirit

Our commitment to spiritual formation is rooted in Wesleyan tradition but open to the movement of the Holy Spirit across denominations, cultures, and experiences. We honor your background and invite your authentic self into a journey of transformation.

Lead, Serve, and Worship Together

Students are encouraged to take active leadership roles in worship and formation. Whether through preaching, liturgy, music, or hospitality, these experiences provide space to grow and to serve as part of your preparation for ministry.

Come Grow With Us

Chapel and spiritual formation are not separate from your studies—they are essential to your preparation for life, leadership, and service in the church and the world.

Chapel Life Leadership

Dr. Hyemin Na is Assistant Professor of Worship, Media and Culture and Chapel Elder of Oxnam Chapel at Wesley Theological Seminary. Professor Na takes decolonial approaches to the study of worship, with research interests in exploring how liturgical practices intersect with media cultures. Her scholarship has been supported by major grants and fellowships from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the Korea Foundation, the Louisville Institute, and Forum for Theological Exploration, among others. Before entering the academy, Professor Na served in various ministries as an ordained Elder in the Northern-Illinois Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
